I'm partial to Norwegian Elkhounds, but then again, I'm mostly just partial to my dog. But yeah, Elkies are noted as being one of the sweetest, smartest, and most loyal breeds. They're actually believed to be smarter than Border Collies, just less trainable (they're smart, but they're VERY defiant). So, you can't really teach them to sit and roll over too well, but the basic stuff (like potty training, etc...) they're basically born knowing.
They're notoriously loyal (to the point that they'll sacrifice themselves for their owner in a conflict without a second thought), but won't let you walk all over them... they demand respect and generally demand to be treated as a human (if you're walking down the street and you want to go one way but they want to go another then, well, there WILL be a stand-off). HUGE amounts of attention is their birth-right, but they'll return it 10 fold.
They're well-tempered... you can pick them up, take food out of their mouth and, when needed, give them shots and take their temperature and, though they'll grumble, they don't bite. They're EXCELLENT with children and will put up with loud noises and good-natured abuse.
They're extremely protective - almost too much so at times. When I was little, mine would keep an eye on me (when I was sick, he'd sit by my bed and watch me the ENTIRE time... apparently even when I was asleep... he still does that, actually, though it wears him it more now that he's 12). If there was a person that he got bad vibes from, he'd stand directly in front of me and stare the person down... with a low gurgle/growl if they came close... he wouldn't attack, though, but would be ready to in an instant (but now that he's 12 and I'm 22, I protect him). Also, if you're used to people house-sitting or if you're gonna be gone and need someone to come over and feed/walk and Elkie... no. If anyone they aren't 100% familiar with enters the house, they will pin them against the wall and hold them there... but they won't attack... they'll seriously just hold them there. And they're loyal, so no treat in the world could persuade them to do otherwise (you know the old cliche about a robber breaking in and throwing a streak to distract the dog? Doesn't work with an Elkhound)
So... they're freakishly smart and very much individuals (and they know it, and expect to be treated as such). They're also VERY sweet and affectionate. But they don't roll over and they don't play fetch (that's beneath them).

No true favorite. I have 4 second hand dogs - Husky, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever and Chihuahua. I love them all! There are some breeds that are very appealing and some that are unappealing to me, but for me it's really more of a personality issue than a looks issue. Some of the best dogs I have ever had have been second hand (rescue) dogs and mutts at that.

I luv ALL dogs! But I have particular liking for large breeds, bully breeds, Bernese Mountain, Alaskan Malamute, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Tervuren, German Shepard, Norwegian Elkhound and Borzoi. The only small dog I'd ever get is a Maltese.
I'd like to adopt my first dog from here. Gentle Giants Rescue and Adoptions http://www.gentlegiantsrescue.com/.

I love Chihuahuas. They are really great little dogs, and they love to cuddle. They are my favorite breed. I am also fond of the way the dogs breeds with the smashed in faces look: Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers. I would not own a Boston terrier though. I have had bad experiences with different types of terriers, and they are not a dog for me, but many of them are cute.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Long name. I know! But they are definitely people dogs. They even love kids and are good with babies. If you don't want a dog that follows you around, licks your face, and wants to play and cuddle every free second you get, then the Cavalier is not for you. This breed is extremely loving. The downfall is they have heart, hip, and arthritis issues and are very pricey. You have to watch who you buy them from and definitely research the breeder. Never buy from a kennel or pet store when purchasing a Cavalier.

Labrador Retrievers. I have owned many many different breeds and although I loved each dog i never fell in love with a breed until I got Labs. They are highly intelligent, easy to train, completely devoted. Very affectionate and loving. They are friendly and outgoing and are very versatile. I would never be without one.

All dogs are lovely - the only time a dog is agressive is because it's been mistreated/badly trained by a human.
Pedigrees are lovely, but so are mixed breeds.

I used to work in an animal hospital, taking care of the animals that had to stay in the clinic. People often boarded their dogs and cats there when they went on vacation. There was a couple who had a little dachshund named Abby. She was the sweetest thing on earth. Every time I came in and saw her in her cage, I'd say in a high pitched baby voice, "It's the wiener dog!!!!!!" and she'd get soooooo excited and wag her little tail a million miles per hour and ever since then I looooooved dachshunds, and someday Im definitely going to own one.
