Some people think pets have a mental link with their favorite person. Take my my mom and her lab Lilly. She knows when my mom is on her way home and waits by the door half an hour before she actually comes home. Its quite amazing.

My dogs know when we are coming home. We have very different and ever changing schedules yet the dogs know. My boyfriend says that way before i even get to the driveway they are at the door crying and the same for him. But the times always change. I watched a TV special on the topic where they did several studies and they were amazed that the dogs knew, they stated that they believe that it is instinct. Animals instincts are way more intuned then ours.

They've done tests on dog's hearing, and they can hear your car's engine down the street. They can identify the differences of your specific car vs. another same make and model car (yes, your brand-new car has its own sound that's unique).
Once the dog hears your car approach, they know that other sounds should occur (your key in the door, or the garage door opening).
We don't consciously think about these things, but the pooches do!

Dogs have an uncanny sense of time. There's a story of a Japanese Akita who walked with his owner 2 miles to a train station every day and then walked back to greet him every afternoon at the same time. This went on for 10 years. The owner died at work one day. The dog still walks back to the station at the same time every day looking for his owner, for the last 5 years. It may not be true, could be an old myth, but that's one example of how powerful their "clock" is.

They have a built in clock....our dog will pull herself out of a deep sleep and go to the door every night at the same time....she knows when it is time for her walk...no one has to ask her...she knows your pattern....and she knows your sound....you car...footsteps....trust me they have excellent hearing....but the biggest thing is she knows what time is normal for you to be showing up....if you are late....your dog will just wait at the door until you show.

You do realize dogs have excellent hearing, right? He hears you come home, the car door slam, the garage door opening, your footsteps, whatever.

He probably just looks at the clock.
No, but seriously my dogs do the same thing. They are at the door waiting for me before i even drive up. They are used to the routine, b/c i get home the same time every day.

He hears you coming, maybe even smells you. Plus he knows its time for you to come home.
You can have two identical cars - or two identical pairs of shoes.
A dog's hearing is so good, it can tell the difference. Something like 30 times better than ours.

If you come home every day at that time, then your dog starts to pick up on it and stores that in his brain. It's like clockwork.
