The "snot" is made up of mucus and dead immune cells. The blood vessels in your nose expand due to inflammation , and so you get that bunged up feeling! Normally the mucus goes up your nasal cavity and trickles into your stomach, but this isn't possible as the airways constric due to the expanded blood vessels.

The mucus protects the body from bacteria and viruses, so when a person has a cold or flu more mucus is secreted and expelled when a person blows their nose.

It's your body trying to cure the illness and prevent further invasion by bacteria and viruses.
