Because fluids thin out the mucus, making it easier to come up. Thick mucus can be trapped in the lungs causing pneumonia. When you drink a lot it things it out, so that you can pass it much easier.
Also, when you are sick, your throat becomes dry and drinking more can help so you don't end up with a sore throat.

It is to help prevent dehydration. It should be pointed out that fluids means clear fluids. That is anything you can see through - -although the preference would be water.

I think it is because it's really easy to get dehydrated when you have a cold and I suppose it would be more difficult for your body to fight the cold then.
