What do I need from him? Title? Registration? Does he need to write a sales statement? After that, do I switch over to my name on the title certificate and turn in to DMV? Any help would be appreciated. You guys are just simply awesome on here!!!

I don't know a great deal of private sellers that will accept financing options, even (or especially!) if they know you. You'd most likely have to and obtain a cashier's check, or work out the financing with a bank. Then take the title (which must be notarized ) and bill of sale to either the DMV or a county courthouse, depending on the state you live in, to get it registered.

#1. You need to come up with your financial backing (bank to finance your loan) to give him the check ON HAND.

#2. You need to obtain a Bill of Sale from him (a letter from him and signed by him saying how much he's selling you the car for).

#3. You need to go to the DMV along with the title, and Bill of Sale (they'll ask you for it) where you will pay the tax, and transfer of tag & title.

# 4. Once all this is done and take possession of the car, you need to notify your insurance of the change.

#5. You need to drive away with the car, and enjoy it.

I dont think I missed any steps.
