I have an old cockatiel that is very cranky. He tries to bite ( if he gets you he will
draw blood), he hisses alot at us. Is there a way I can calm him down so that he doesn't
try to bite me every time I give him fresh water or seed?

How old is he exactly? Maybe he just feel like being cranky because he is old depending on his age...in any case, maybe the bird is lonely? If you know he will get along with another bird of his type you could get him a friend. If you aren't sure having one in a cage in the same room even if it isn't the same type will be good company. I had a quaker in one cage and a budgie in another cage in the same room. They liked to watch each other and whistle. Cute... As far as the fresh water and seed.. OK whenever I had a cranky bird I would put a small dishcloth or washcloth over my hand. Birds don't like those but they can't bite you as hard. Either the bird will be afraid and go to the opposite side of the cage or it will charge your covered up hand. I later got into the cages designed so that you could change the water and food from the outside of the cage. the birds had a tendency to poop in the food or water bowl more if it was just sitting on the bottom of the cage. I hope something here has helped you.
