I'll be turning 18 on the 13th of July. It's a turning point in more ways than the obvious. What I need to know, though, is if I want to get inked on my birthday, can I go in for a consultation about a week before that? I mean, obviously if I bring in my mother, but I need this to be the first thing that I did right all on my own, regardless of the fact that I'll need a ride out there. I know better than to walk in with a sketchy design expecting to get it inked looking perfect on my skin, and flash is out because getting a tattoo that someone may have already or get in the future doesn't excite me. Will the artist talk to me, seriously, even though I'll be a little shy of a legal adult?
Also, which areas of the foot are fit for a tattoo? I knew this, I know I did, but I think I should ready a backup now if the area above the heal on the inside of the foot is un-tattooable.
Anyways, thanks much.

In response to the first answer, at first I was extremely offended that you assumed I was jumping in with no knowledge, but then I figured not everyone understands entirely what they read, so I guess it's okay. I've spoken to quite a few tattoo artists, actually, it's just been about six months since my last piercing so I haven't had the opportunity to chat in a while. This tattoo is four years in the making, initially I wanted it on my wrist or thumb-web, then thought better and decided the foot would look just as nice. The style is still changing a little here, a little there, but the thing that remains the same is that it will be a blackwork hear with a design in the middle, making it simple to cover up and make into a solid heart should I ever decide that I don't like it anymore. I just want anyone else to know, I know a helluva lot more about this subject than it seems. This is what I live for.
Still, seems a little nuts to be making appointments 5month in advance.

I can't offer advice as to how the artist will react, but I can tell you that getting tattoed on your foot will hurt. The best place, however, would be very top of your foot, but it is sensitive and not very "meaty". I would steer clear of anything on your toes or the sole of your foot because they simply won't last. I have a tattoo on the inside of my leg, right above my ankle bone and it was really tender, but totally tatto-able. Hope you have a great design and good luck with your very first tattoo!

Most legitimate tattoo artists won't guarantee (if they don't refuse to do a foot tattoo) the quality of any work done on the foot because:
A) Feet/hands reproduce skin cells faster and more often than any other part of your body, which means, without proper care and ample healing the chances of your foot tattoo losing ink are very good.
B) Foot tattoos have a high chance of ink migration - which is basically when the ink begins to spread around the skin. Foot tattoos should be simple in design and they will most likely require touch ups (eventually).
You will also have to be able to wear flip flops/sandals for at least 2 weeks and avoid sun light for a few days immediately following the tattooing to keep the colors vibrant.
I did the research because I have a tree frog on the top of my foot...and it felt like someone was scratching the hell out of a HORRIBLE sunburn. Good luck!

First of all CONGRATS, your making a huge decision and I wanna wish you good luck!!That is what exactly I did,I turned 18 on January 14th 2007, and the only thing I wanted to do was get a tattoo on the same day as my 18th birthday and thats exactly what I did!!! I got a huge tattoo, I went there at 9 in the morning to get my appointment and artist picked out. I went to Tatts by Zapp and its in Stillwater MN and they do all of my stuff, they pierce me and I would definetly go back for more piercings and tattoos!! I told My artist what I wanted and they were lillies and he made them start on my hip and go up my side on my ribs and a little came around onto my ribs on my stomach and it went over my spine and up to my shoulder blades and I just got the outline it took 3 hours to do. It hurt, but like anything it was definetly worth it, don't listen to people who say you have it for the rest of your life because if you really want this you wont have any regrets, I sure don't!!When I got the stencil put on me my step mom, my dad,my step brother, and my boyfriend were with me and my dad thought I should of gone smaller but I told him its the size I want, it was perfect!!!Now my dad asks to see it and he says everytime, I couldn't imagine you getting that smaller. It turned out beautiful!!! My advice, whether you want a huge tattoo or a small tattoo go for it you will always remember your 18th birthday!!!! Happy early Birthday to you!!!!

I got a tat for my 17th birthday then another one after that, when I was still 17. I went in and talked to them about it with out my parents and they took me very seriously. The only thing you would need your mom for (if u were under 18) is to sign for you to get it. Other than that you don't need a parent. I only had my mom sign the papers then she left, and I went a week before than and told them what I wanted and had them get it ready for me and everything and my mom wasnt there at the time, and like I said, it was a good week before my 17th bday so I was only 16! Hope this helps.

If you call ahead and explain you should be fine if its a good place.
The artist should sit with you and explain everything. There are really no "un-tattooable" spots, just painful and super-painfull.
The inside ankle is fine. The only part you realy want to avoid is the pad of your foot. Major pain and it fades fast.
Good luck!!

It doesn't sound to me that you are really ready for a tattoo...you have too many unanswered questions that maybe the artist can answer for you and someone like me can't because it should be a personal thing. You will have this tattoo forever..it shouldn't be easy to pick a design or where to put it.It will become part of who you are and what you want to project to others whether you intend to or not.Visit several Tattoo artists and ask as many questions as you need .
