As far as I know the Romans nailed people to trees using a cross piece called a transom- purpose built crosses were the exception, in fact I don't know if there is evidence that supports their existence.

I can't remeber exactly what I was taught. I am thinking it was carried by some ruler into battle over and over but then later it was stolen by a woman who went all over collecting relics. Now the Catholic church has what they believe to be pieces of it.There is shreds of it in some of the churches.

it was most likely that it was reused or burned. i doubt that it was turned into small toothpick-like peices.
