I'm going to Germany real soon and I was wondering if anyone had some handy German everyday phrases that I could use while i'm out there?
stuff like:

please could you pass the....?
where is the toilet?

I'm staying with a lovely German family - I know one of them, but the other 3 don't really speak english.

thank you in advance, xx

yes it's becoming common. and according to the people i talked to in Germany, English is a required language in grade schools there. as to whether it's trendy, from what i saw, there's still a lot of national pride in Germany and people are more likely to speak German than English even when they're fluent in both.

could you pass me the ...
Könntest du mir bitte (mal) die/den/das ... geben

Where is the toilet?
(formal) Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen, wo hier die Toiletten sind?
(informal) Wo ist die Toilette?/Wo ist das Klo?

hey, what about teaching them English. I'm sure they'd appreciate learning English (because some day, every German needs his/her English...at least our teachers used to say we'll need it)
