The accented vivid red wall has white crown molding and the other walls are a parisian taupe color. The floor and verticals are a light hard wood while the kitchen is black with brushed stainless steel. Since there is red, white, taupe and black colors, I have no idea what color furniture would look best. I don't want any white furniture as our pets would dirty it quickly. I am looking for a color for the furniture that is contemporary and would work best with all the colors in the apartment. Any advice you could provide will be greatly appreciated.

A bronzey green or grass green would look beautiful with that combination. You could also bring in some golden yellow or butterscotch colors. It's a classic color combination with the red and taupe and would make it look very rich and exciting.

If there is room against the red wall, I would put 2 small chairs and a small table for an intimate seating area. I would buy the chairs upholstered in a durable fabric that has red, and scattered black, with the main color being a taupe background. Put your main couch against the taupe wall. If you can afford leather, I would get a light brown. You can bring in your red and black colors with throw pillows, and a lap blanket, candles, and accessories. Don't over do the black color. Red goes well with light shades of burgandy, cream, yellow, or other shades of red. To help you tone down the red wall you can always put shears at the top of the wall, all the way across and then tie them back. with your 2 small chairs positioned in front it will look like a cafe. I hope this helps

Assuming that your fur-bearing pets are allowed on the furniture, stay away from microfibre (feels and looks like suede). We have two cushions made of it and they need constant brushing. Since you also mention the kitchen decor, I also assume that this is an open concept flat where one is trying to make it look as spacious as possible with a pleasing colour combinations.

We solved the sofa problem with an IKEA black leather one called KLIPPEN. We complemented it with the leather POANG chair and footstool. These come in many different colours of leather and wood. We chose a redder hued wood because it complements our fireplace. But I recall it coming in an ebony finish as well.

The floor really isn't an issue because you can use an area rug to "ground" the sitting area and delineate it from dining and/or kitchen areas.

The great thing about the leather sofa is that the cats will not lay on it! One of them knocks down the cushion on the POANG chair so that he can lie on fabric. If the cushion is elsewhere, he chooses another spot for his beauty rest. Suits me. That's one fewer surfaces to brush.

Rectangular and square leather ottomans that double as coffee tables are all the rage right now, too.

Matching reds can be tricky. Unless you have an exact paint chip to take while shopping, I would stay away from them except as an accent (e.g. bits in the area rug). Blacks, greys and paler versions of the taupe are best for the large pieces of furniture. For accent pieces (lamps, cushions, throws, window coverings) choose hues form the cooler exact opposite side of the colour wheel from the red and taupe like the teals and blues.

How about a Bergundy coloured chair, loveseat/couch. long glass coffee table and 2 varnished wood end tables. A chandelier in the center of the ceiling could add to the ambiance, or 2 stand tall black lights with dimmers in opposite corners of the room. One idea.

When decorating I always go to the trusty color wheel. The color opposite to red is green. Use green accessories to decorate and cordinate. Go to Behr.com and select explore color. Your main color would be red. It'll give you options like complementary etc. It's an excellent site to aide in choosing colors and color accessories that goes with it.

I would go with dark wood with a merlot, burgundy color fabric. It would make for good contrast with your floors, yet complement your focal wall.
