Aren't there some classic things photographers use to get people to smile? Kids and adults... I've heard things like imagine your dad with pink panyhose on... anything else?

when dealing with boys or men i usually tell them "now say wild women" they always laugh at that. especially if they were tryin to hold their smile

I like to act like I'm a supermodel photographer. I'll say stuff like, "Oh yeah, baby - work it! Work it! That's it. Oh yeah. Work it!" It will almost always bring a huge smile! :-D

"I'm hung like a Hamster!" for adults
"Rubber Biscuits" for kids
" great baby! Work it, work it! Okay,now foot on his shoulder and a little smile..." for those "other" photos you take....
