yes he did because someone needed to preach to lost souls suffering in Hell why they were there; 1 peter 3: 17For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. 18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
Jesus Christ did go to Hell and get from Satan these keys; Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
And these key was how he turned all the saints loose upon the earth after his Crucifixion; Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
Here is Abraham, Issac,Jacob, and all the rest of the dead people walking around the city after Jesus died appearing to many people. Is amazing how so many people over look this fact.

Before JESUS, there was a gap that linked all those who had died from GOD, JESUS descended in the depths of hell to release all of those waiting to go to GOD, starting with Adam. Only those that believed in HIM rose from the dead. Now hell is a place where those that do not believe go to. JESUS is the link to GOD. JESUS has conquered even death.

Ya know, if you would ask the actual question in the header, the search function would have shown you the question that was asked THIRTY SECONDS AGO!
He descended into Hell, took the keys, released the prisoners, and stomped Satan into a wet spot on the ground. Then He rose from the dead.

Jesus went into hell to the area called paradise , reserved for the old testament saints. As Jesus told the thief on the cross, "Today you will be with me in paradise"
He set the old testament saints free. This was the true resurrection. No one went to Heaven before this, They were in the bosom of Abraham in paradise.
Jesus told of the rich man that died and was in hell and across an obis, he could see Lazarus and asked if Lazarus could put his finger in water and place in on his tongue. He was denied.
Jesus purpose was this. There was no permanent escape from sin until the promised Messiah came to take away their sins forever. The mercy seat would only remove their sin for one year.

Before Christianity, the only place anyone went after a physical death was 'Sheol' (Aramaic word that has the same meaning as grave, purgatory, Hades) so when the Xians came along, they were waiting in Hell, and (like Dionysus-Greek god of music), he went there, rescued some founding fathers who had not ascended directly into the heavens (there were precious few, I think Elijah was one), stomped on Satan, then resurrected

He descended into Hell long enough to spread the word that victory over death, the grave, and Hell was His. It was His way of "rubbing it in Satan's face" as it were.

He did!
Jesus descended into Hell to confront Satan and tell Him that He, Jesus Christ, had paid the sin debt in full for many of those souls who then were the property of Satan in Hell and.....
that Jesus would be taking those souls with Him.....
and, He descended into Hell for YOU.....
in YOUR place.....
for, up to that time, that was to be YOUR punishment for YOUR sins.

Jesus went to hell, to preach and set the captives free. He atoned for the sin since Adam, so had to go back for those people.
Edit: and what Chef Bob said!!!

I don't think that this is a universal Christian belief but I heard one time that Jesus went to hell to reclaim the keys to life or something like that and so he was able to beat death and we are now able to have everlasting life.
