I'm stoning a front porch with natural stone on a my new house, ie inner block / cavity / outter block + Natural stone (approx 6" in thickness). There is a gothic arch in the porch and my question is do you normally order a lintel wide enough to allow the stone to be supported by the lintel as well. Or does anyone have any other ideas.

boy boy is right.

my understanding is that you would use a (cheaper and readily available) lintel horizontally above the arch to support the masonry above and the arch itself would be self supporting.

look at castles & cathedrals!
