I would definitely get a second opinion. Get copies of all your recent x-rays and have an evaluation done at another office. Your dental insurance may be strict about coverage. It's hard to tell with dentist whether or not they are greedy, or truly care about your dental needs. Always ask if there is alternative to the treatment diagnosed, and what the risks are.

It would be stupid for the dentist to deliberately recommend treatment he knows you can't pay for.

Chances are, your dentist doesn't even know what your insurance pays for or doesn't. He or she is going by WHAT YOU NEED, not by your coverage.

If all the dentist wanted was money, they would ONLY do procedures that ARE covered - that way they wouldn't have to go after delinquent accounts. Do you have any idea how costly it is to try to collect past-due accounts? There is absolutely no reason a dentist wants a patient to run up a big bill they can't pay.
