Before Lexx went missing, I had 2 cats, Lexx and Stanley. Both males under a year, really good playmates. Lexx disappeared about 4 months back and in Jan I got another kitten, Marmite, Female. Stan & Marmite also became good playmates. Yesterday afternoon, Lexx was found! Hungry, skinny, but in one piece. He is the same affectionate cat towards me and he recognises home, but his attitude towards the other cats is not inspiring me with confidence. After some raised hackles encounters, he has settled into growling whenever he sees them in the room. The other two aren't retaliating, just curious and wary. Lexx is now in the bedroom for the day (with necessities) so Stan and Marmite have the benefit of the catdoor and the house. Is there any hope of Lexx coming round with love and reassurance or am I doomed to always have an under current of tension running through the place? (nb. Stan is fixed, Marmite is too young for a little while and Lexx is entire, but not for long.)

Lexx needs to be fixed as soon as you can. He will settle down more and not be as inclined to roam and integrate better with the other cats. DON'T let him out before the surgery is done and it will take a few weeks for all the hormones to clear his system after the surgery.

Because he is malnourished right now he is not feeling too good either and who knows what his experiences were when he was out on his own - obviously without adequate nourishment or shelter.

I think the prospects are good for his coming around well and right now I would give him his own space to recover and not force any kind of integration with the other cats.

You can get a bottle of Rescue Remedy for about $16 from a health foods store and treat him with that. You just shake the bottle well and put three to four drops on the fur between his ears. Treat him intensely for at least a week to ten days, putting drops on him four times a day if you can, especially in the AM and before bedtime. It will definitely help him clear any emotional issues surrounding his unfortunate experience and it is good to use before and after his surgery too.

Cats are very intuitive and sensitive animals. This sounds like Lexx is a bit put off that there is a new cat in HIS home.

If you put yourself in Lexx's position... Imagine that you (for whatever reason) were lost and could not get home for four months. Then, when you do make it back home, there is someone new living in your house. Hmmmm.... You should just have a big heart to heart talk with Lexx. Talk to him like he is a person. Tell him how you feel, that you are glad he is home, and that the new cat did NOT replace him, but is now a member of the family. Hey, it might not work miracles, but it can not hurt.

I'm sure that you are very happy to have your cat back home. It will be normal for him to feel this way with the other cats. You really don't know what he has gone through this past 4 months and then to come back to his home and find strange kitties in his home. I think if you just keep them separated for a few days or maybe a week, and give him lots of love,, then introduce them gradually when you will be there to supervise, everything will eventually be OK> Just have a little patience...

It is highly likely he had to compete with other cats to survive. He will need to learn that the other cats are not a threat to him and that will take time. Make sure you let them together when you are around and pay attention to all of them in sight of each other so he knows that the other cats are not going to take your attention away again.

erm maybe he just needs to get used to the other cat again and then get used to the new cat.

also its great that you found him alive and that he still remembers u and home.
