The term is Coprophagia and there have been many speculated answers to this question. Lack of nutrients and an evolutionary instinct to remove their scent from the area are the two most proliferative. Both have been proven wrong.

The simple fact is, we don't know, and it's more important to curb the habit rather than speculate why it's happening. The best way to eliminate the behavior is with a food additive such as Forbid, which you can get from most veterinary offices without them seeing your pet.

their "stuff" is bad enouph, but we have a dog in the neighborhood what goes around and digs up all the cat poop and devours it like it's candy. that CANT be good!
