United won't give you a discount for miles. You need to have enough miles to purchase the full fare, which is 50,000 for standard award (has no blackout dates, you can redeem them anytime you want as long as there is a seat on the plane) for a domestic flight. You could use the miles to upgrade; upgrades start at 8,000 miles each way but could be higher depending on how far the trip is going. You could go to a site like points.com and convert the points to gift certificates but the redemption rate is not very favorable; if you get more than $20 for those miles, I would be surprised. Your best option is to purchase the fare with United (or check USAir--- the two airlines are part of an alliance where you can fly on USAir and earn United miles, or vice-versa) and keep flying with them till you have enough points to get a free trip.
