PayPal works fine for me; I've had an account for 6 years with no problems.
The one thing you must be careful of are phishing e-mails from fake PayPal sites. Never open or respond to any e-mails that claim they are from PayPal. If you follow the links in fake e-mails, they can steal your info and change your account. Only communicate directly with PayPal from their site and you will be ok.

The association I worked for has paypal set up on their website to accept membership payments. It works just fine. Be aware of the fees related with certain transactions though,it's just like a bank, they charge on certain items/transactions. I know there are a lot of people out there with complaints but majority of those people either didn't read or understand the rules. Another thing you want to watch for is emails that say they are from paypal about changing your account details and such, the best thing you can do when you receive these kinds of emails is to contact them directly by phone - never reply to those types of emails because that's how you're personal information gets out. Like anything that involves your personal information floating around on the internet highway just be careful and do whatever is possible to protect yourself.

I have had my paypal account for 5 years.
No MAJOR problems at all.
IT is legit (lots of fees ($$) for the reciever of the money) but it also offers alot of protection for the buyer.
I assume that you are buying from someone so I dont see any issues that you would have with that using paypal.
If you are unsure about your seller, be sure to use paypal to pay for your purchase USING YOUR CREDIT CARD then even if your seller is bad you have recourse!
After you sign up with paypal, the major problem that i see is the phising emails.
I get one at least daily! The stuff looks like it is from paypal but it is NOT.
They ask for your information on an email that looks like it came from paypal.
PAYPAL will NEVER ask you personal questions in an email.
when in doubt, DONT repsond to the email but log directly into the paypal account (dont link to it from emails either)
and you should be fine!

It is very safe and secure to do business with Paypal. I have been using them for over 5 years now and have found them to be one of the safest methods for paying for items via the internet. If you are getting "paypal" alerts DO NOT under any cicurmstances respond to them or click any link as these are hackers trying to gain access into your paypal account. If you feel paypal had something to communicate with you.. go directly to their site and they will leave communication for you on your account. They DO NOT send emails with links in them to clients.

Pay Pal is legit and relatively safe. There are many complaints from users, although most of them are from people that didn't bother the read the rules before they started using the service. Or from people too impatient to use proper channels.
For person-to-person transactions, there is no better way of doing it, right now. Other options are either more expensive, offer even fewer protections, or are outside of the law.

Just be careful where you purchase from, especially from the evil known as ebay. I have found that PayPal is great unless you run into a problem. Their customer service isn't all that great.

They are legitimate and a if you order from ebay a lot, it's almost impossible to order from there without PayPal. I've had absolutely no problems with it.

STAY AWAY FROM PAYPAL. THEY ARE THEIVES. I had an account with Paypal because I found a forum that was similar to Yahoo Answers and it paid me to discuss questions. However, I found out sometime last week from paypal adminsitrators that I changed my password question, my security question and my email. I DIDN'T AUTHORIZE THESE CHEANGES.Since Paypal required to know my bank account, I was a victim of Identity theft. So, stay away unless you want your identity stolen.
