What's the simplest way to turn DC current into AC current using a minimum of simple electronic components?

If you insist on DIY, then I would recommend an older copy of the ARRL handbook, one from the early 70's since it carried a schematic for a simple square wave type inverter. Don't try to run a small TV or radio with it because they will buzz badly. If you consider a ready made device to be a component, then a computer power supply would do the same thing, just lift the leads on the secondary side of the transformer.
Eugene also had a good idea, such inverters can be bought from Wal Mart, Harbor Freight, or from a RV store.

Buy an inverter. If you have to ask this question here, you don't have the knowledge to build one. Just do it for personal safety.
