as a person starts listening to a book-on-tape, positron emission tomography (PET) scanning shows a steep inrease in activity in the superior temporal gyrus.
Is this the result of an increase of number of neurons associated with hearing?????

or
density of neurons associated with reading
inhibition of the neurons in the somatosensory cortex
glucose metabolism by nuerons associated with language or
none of these????

If those are your primary answer choices, I would say "glucose metabolism by nuerons associated with language" is the most correct. PET scans light up cells that are metabolically active, which is consistent with that answer choice, both cell-physiologically and radiographically.

PET scan positivity is not seen with the other answer choices, so rule those out by elimination.

It would be due to increased activity of the neurons making up the primary auditory cortex. When you are listening, these neurons have to get more active.
