Ok, firstly not to turn this into a "Martial Arts" debate but martial arts did not "start" with monks, that would imply that martial arts was exclusively asian. Meaning that no one ever picked up a stick and hit someone else in the head, or that there were no wars before that. martial arts (translated) comes from the term "the arts of Mars". Mars the god of war. Rome had a rich martial culture, as did greece and even the ancient civilizations you read about in the bible (however we have no preserved "fectbooks" detailing the martial arts techniques of the ancient israelites like we do for european cultures).

Martial Arts were learned mostly by Monks assigned in the forested and remote areas where they were oftentimes victimized by robbers or people who do not want them in the place. This was encouraged to them since they cannot use any object made as a weapon so they were taught a bare hand defense. It also have been useful for them to discipline their minds in many aspects. Most of their interests however is in the ability to learn how to discipline themselves to fight their own demons.
Some interesting accomplishments was their ability to chop woods for their fuel needs. I just do no know if they are being learned in urban areas.

Yes to the first question
No to the second: Shaolin (check spelling) priests aren't into little boys. But if famous entertainers are getting into eastern practices they'd better watch out for michael jacksin.
