I have no time to train a puppy - is it possible to leave it in a large crate all day and take it out at night? Is it better to get a dog from a shelter? I want a very small dog (yorkie, toy poodle, etc.)

You pretty much answered your own question when you said that you ave no time to train a puppy.

Puppies cannot be expected their bowels or bladders for long periods and it's not fair to leave one alone all day and expect him or her not to have to have accidents. They need to be taken out at least every hour, and especially after waking up, eating or playing A large crate would be a major mistake because it gives the pup room to eliminate without having to lay in its mess, and it's next to impossible to expect him or her not to eliminate, even if you use a small crate. You need to be consistent when you try to house train a new pup, and you can't be if you're gone during the day.

I think your best choice is to adopt from the pound, a shelter or a rescue organization, not to mention you would be saving a life, too.

Good luck :-)

It's true that dogs don't like to soil where they sleep, but to an extent. If you leave a puppy in a kennel for more than about 3-4 hours, he's going to pee.. and poop...and get it all over himself and whatever else is in there. There's no way an 8-16 week old puppy can hold it for that long. They just don't have the bladder control!!!

Look into adopting an older dog - however, if you don't have any time during the day, its not really fair to the dog. Dogs are social animals and do not like to be left alone. It's likely he'd tear up your house... and I mean tear up your house.

People will tell you that you can crate a dog for that long - but I seriously wouldn't.. You will end up with a mess every night and probably an animal neglect/abuse case on your hands. and then what are you going to do ? get mad at the people on Yahoo! Answers?!?

Get a cat, they are more independant and don't need to be taken out.

Another concern with getting a dog/puppy is that a puppy can't go 6 - 8 hours a day without FOOD and WATER! Puppies eat 3 - 4 times a day and need constant water. And that means even more pee and poop. Please, please don't do this to an innocent puppy.

I crate my dogs during the day. I don't leave them in there all day though, I have a Pet Sitter come in mid-day to take them for a walk, play with them and give them love. They're never in the crate for more than 4 hours at a time. The crate should only be big enough for the dog to stand, turn around and lay down comfortably. If you've got a puppy, then your best bet is a wire crate - Buy the crate to fit the dog when it will be full-grown, then use the divider that comes with it to change the size of the crate as the puppy grows.

A large crate is the worst idea possible, because if your puppy has extra room he will use the crate as his bathroom. I agree to get an older dog if you have no time to crate train it, but no dog should have a crate bigger than it needs to lay down comfortably. Also, any dog will have trouble lasting all day. Do you mean all day like 8 hours or like 12 hours? You could get a trusted neighbor to take it out once during the day... If you're not home all day a new dog should definitely be in a crate, anyway, because you don't know how his temperament is yet and you could come home to a ruined house.

You answered your own question. You do not have time to train a puppy. that means you should NOT get one! you can't house train a puppy if you can't be there with it. if you are set on getting a dog, adopt an older one that is already house trained.if you work full time like most people, and the dog would be crated 8 hours or so, it should be fine as long as it is already house and crate trained. you could also hire someone to come let it out during the day. sorry to say though, a puppy is not for you!

You should not get a dog at all if you don't have time for him/her. A dog is like a child that never grows and will always need you for love, food, exercise and shelter. To be a dog owner is a huge responsibility, only compared to the one of being a parent. Would you keep a baby alone in a crate all day?
Besides the sentimental issue of being caged and alone all day (which will cause you problems like unstopable crying and barking), it is not natural for a dog to pup, sleep and eat at the same place. Like humans, dogs also choose separate areas of the house for those and being crated all day might make your dog eat his/hers own feces. It will also get wet from its pee and from playing with its water bowl (which will make the crate wet and finish with the water for you puppy).
If you really don't have time, please reconsider owning a pet. They are the ones that love you the most and you have to give more than a crate for this unconditional love. When I talk about unconditional love, just remember that homeless people usually are left by all their loved ones. Only their dogs share the cold, hunger and loneliness on the streets with them.

Puppies can not be expected to house train until they are at least 12 weeks old. If you use a crate make sure it is not to big. Yes I said to BIG, follow the gudelines that came with your crate, if the dog has too much space it will think its ok to potty inside. I love my dog and she was house trained in a crate. She loves her crate and will go in it by her self. I think it would be cruel to leave the puppy in the crate for long periods of time. I had the opportunity to go home at lunch and play with her, if that is not an option check into doggy daycare. (its cheaper than you think) Good Luck!

You have a couple of options here. A) You can do what I do, come home during your lunch break to feed and let him/her out, b)hire someone to come in the middle of the day C) pay for doggy day care, D) Don't get a dog or get an adult dog that has already been house trained, Because you need to figure out the time to train your dog you can't just expect it to hold his urine and bowel movements for 8 hrs or more straight. If you admit you have no time, my best suggestion would be to not get one, all dogs need time. I leave mine at home for no longer than 5 hrs at a time and thats stretching it, when I come home, I'm all about her until she gets tired and then on the weekends I spend a lot of time with her. Its a huge commitment you have to be sure you're ready to give. Remember you'll have that dog anywhere from 12-16 years, don't make any rash decisions.

Maybe you shouldnt have a dog if you don't have the time. If you just crate your dog all the time while your out doing other things the dog is going to be bored and lonely. He will start acting out and it will cause alot of behaivior problems. Think about what would be best for the doggy. Wait until you have the time and energy to get a dog.

Don't get a pup, get an older dog and crate train. A mature dog can hold "it" for a work shift. A puppy can not. If you adopt from a shelter the dog may already be house trained.
