If I relocate to the UK from the US for a job, will I be able to establish credit, or does my US credit profile somehow transfer?

We just moved to the UK from the US for a job. Your credit absolutely does NOT transfer and it may be a source of irritation in the early days of your move. We were told that identity theft is bad in the UK which is why the process for establishing yourself can be very complicated.

In order to rent a home, you will most likely need a UK bank account... Unfortunately, in order to get a UK bank account, you need a copy of a utility bill showing that you actually reside there. A bit of a catch 22, but you may be able to work this out by going with a private landlord instead of a real estate agent. Some agents may work with you as well.

As soon as you take possession of your new house, order phone (www.bt.co.uk). You can't get internet or tv service or anything without it. Getting a telephone line took us a while. Because you don't have a history, they require a 50 pound deposit. While you can pay your bill at the post office, you must mail the deposit. It can take a while for them to process it. We moved into our house on Jan 22 and didn't get phone until last Monday the 5th. We weren't able to even order internet until the 7th and it gets installed tomorrow the 13th.

Regarding banks... Our US bank offers a pound sterling account, which we opened. This does NOT help you here. In order to start establishing credit and to be able to sign up for anything, you need at least a debit card drawn on a UK bank. We went to our local Barclays and the people there were great in helping us do what we needed to do.

It is wonderful to live here, but understand that you will have to be patient in the early days. It is definitely worth it. Good luck!
