I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas as to how I can try and stop this one routine in particular.

In my math class, when doing problems i have to do the problem at LEAST 4 or 5 times. and even if i know its right i feel like i NEED to check it again. And if i try not to do it, ill go back to it at the end of my quiz to do it like 3 more times. its starting to become a hassal. Today i took a quiz and i had to stay late because it took me so long just to finish it.

And i DO take medication so i would appreciate it if you dont tell me to go get medication, im just looking for other people with OCD to maybe give me some advice. Thanks alot!

Well, all you can do is gradually erase the habit. Next time you take a math quiz, do it 4 times over; for 1 month, continue with that habit, and then do it only 3 times over. and after that, maybe 6 months later, get it down to 2 times over. Doing a problem twice over is reasonable because the teacher allots time for students to double check their work.

What helped my OCD the best was therapy. I learned how to think my way out of situations. A lot of it is anxiety therapy. I still have some obsessions, but I no longer need to follow through with the compulsions. Talk to your doctor about getting a therapist. You and your therapist can then find the best way out of that situation or any situation.

It takes a lot of work, about 3 years of therapy got me through. I can proudly say I no longer need any crappy medications.

What I usually do is do all the problems at once (dont check any of them) then you have to distract yourself to something else (no matter what it is) going to the nurse maybe or bathroom this should give your subconcious a jolt (which is causing this thinking) and you with time you should get conditioned to not want to check them at all!!!

I had something similar.
When I realized that it was merely a way for me to feel secure that I hadn't made a mistake, I began to not feel the overwhelming desire to compulsively repeat things.
Yes, some white-coats tried to diagnose me as OCD.
I was able to work my way out of it without their pills. I hope you can too.

If your career aspirations are going to involve anything in scientific research or finance, this will be to your advantage as often you will have to double and triple check your work (and approach from many different angles). If your brain is wired this way, use it to your advantage.
