Take it to a vet to find out why and have the dog treated. Since you don't know that maybe you need to know this as well. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Without a full description of the hair loss it is hard to say but the most common problem in puppies with hair loss is demodex. It is a hereditary mange that is passed on from the mother. It is treatable and while its unsightly ,with treatment the hair will grow back. The demodex is brought on when a puppy is stressed. So it is easy to understand that this would happen after you take him home. There are too many unfamiliar sights and sounds for some puppies to cope with. Your puppy would be put on a round of antibiotics and regular shampooing with a special shampoo.

And you're sure he's not just shedding? It's normal for dogs to shed, particularly at that age when they're going through shedding season, but if he's losing patches of hair, you should be concerned.
Mange, skin disorders, certain kidney problems, and other medical problems can all result in loss of hair. Take your dog to the vet for a full medical exam. They should tell you what's wrong with him.
