I am looking to purchase a car. I need a 5 speed hatchback with great gas mileage. I have narrowed my search to two cars, the Ford Focus or the VW Golf.

I can get a 2003 Ford Focus for about $6000. For the same price, I can get a 1996 VW Golf.

In your opinion, what would you get, the older VW or the newer Ford. Do you own either of the cars? What do you base your opinion on?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Go with the 98 VW Golf. The VWs are built like tanks and last forever. A Ford anything, on the other hand, is pure junk (FORD= Fix Or Repair Daily).

Seriously, get the Golf. Look at the value..... a 98 @ $6000 vs. a 2003 @ $6000. In 1 year, the Golf will be worth more than the throw-away Focus.

Go for the newer car. The Ford Focus is a very reliable car, however it suffers from an image thing and the resale value makes it a great buy. The five year difference in the age will make the Ford the best choice all the way. VW Golf's did not have a wonderful reputation either, but manage to hold on to a bit of their value longer.

The Focus is a great car. The VW has had a problem with quality and performance. Plus the focus is newer. I'd get the Focus. However, the $6K sounds high, for EITHER car. I would check around a bit!

Both have about the same quality ratings which are not great but not horrible either. I'd get the focus because they are usually a lot less expensive to buy, repair, and maintain. I have an 02 focus which has been pretty solid so far. Only minor problems. Resale value is probably better on the Vdub though. Fords don't keep their value as well. Hope this helps.

Depending on how the previous owner of the Volkswagen treated it and maintained it, i would say stick with the Volkswagen. Ive seen well maintained Volkswagen go for 200,000 to 300,000 miles no major repairs. Most the Volkswagen will ever need is a timing belt, and maybe a water pump. Two very reasonable repairs. My family has had like 3 Volkswagen and 2 of them were like the bug your looking at and the last one is my baby, Its a 2005 GLI. Absolutely love the car. One thing to think about when looking in to this Volkswagen is if has had all its maintenance done and how the owner drove the vehicle. Happy V Dub buying!

My girlfriend has a 2006 focus and loves it. I have heard about quality control issues with VWs, especially of that era. Do you really want to buy an 11-model-year old car for $6000?

i own a repair shop, and between these two i would have to go with focus, its a much better vehicle and more dependable also, they give very little trouble,as for the vw it will have a lot of electrical problem, the focus wont, and i think it will probably out last the vw also, just between those two,go with the focus, you,ll be making a wise decision, good luck,i hope his help,s.

I would take the VW any day those things run forever. I had a 93 VW jetta and got 250,000 miles out of it before I sold it.
