i train my dogs with the belief that only tolerate the behavior you are willing to live with when the dog is an adult. be firm and decisive. dogs understand discipline, and they understand leadership. they have no problem when they know their place, it's when the owner is unwilling to take on the role of leader that the dog becomes confused (and unhappy). when my dogs misbehave, i attack. and then it is over. just like another dog would do.

*Maybe* because you are a real dog person who would never be stupid enough to go to a bunch of furbaby pet owners for advice about anything.
LOL!!! You have certainly brought out all the furbaby owners! Not only have they never spent a single day managing a pack of 20-30 dogs, many of them are still trying to figure out how to teach Fluffy to not potty in the house.
I do agree with Melon though, there are no one size fits all methods, whether the methods are all force or Purely Postive. All individuals who respond best to methods based on their personality.
Posters - Have you EVER watched dogs reprimand each other??? It is swift and hard, but not necessarily hard PHYSICALLY. How many dogs do YOU see begging and bribing each other with treats? This is one of the reasons we have so many dog bites, your average pet owner is completely clueless about how to communicate with their animals.

You may have a dog that is low in dominance and will accept a different method. Some people will have the best dog (well trained etc), and get another one expecting the same behavior to find that the next one is just a monster compared to the first. It has to do with the difference in personality. I guess you are just lucky you found a dog with a personality you can handle.

Just because you did not follow the advise of a web sight on trianing your dog dose not mean you did it wrong. Depending on who you talk to and what they do in training everyone who trains a dog is doing something wrong according to others. What you have to remember is that you use what works for you and your dog. If your dog is well behaved and listens to you then you have done a good job. Just remember that others are also going to feel that their dog is the best and hardest working dog around as well.

Everyone on this site gives different advice -- it's usually up to the asker to pick out the answer that seems most logical. Your question isn't very specific. Just because you went against what the majority of answerers told you, it doesn't mean your dog is better than the many people who use great training techniques on their dogs. It's quite rash to assume that your dog is the best trained out of everyone's when everyone gives different answers to your training questions.

I appreciate your point. My husband believes the exact same thing and our dog is very well behaved (he is a lab/beagle mix). If he even looked at our 2 year old son the wrong way, he would be in trouble. Now he lets my son climb all over him and they get along great. You are right.. you have to let them know who is the boss (leader) because they are pack animals. When we are leaving, we put him in his "crate" - my husband just says CAGE and he goes in there. He also likes to go in there to be alone sometimes. He is the best dog we ever had.

just because "they" say there is a certain way to train an animal, isn't necessisarily true. You seem to have your own methods, and if it works & your dogs are well behaved, I would stick with what works for you.

Well, apparently you found a method that serves you and your dog well. Not all training methods are appropriate for everyone and every dog. Don't be so quick to critisize things that do work for others, just because you don't use them yourself. Live and let live.

so your dog responds out of fear of you "attacking"? wow. impressive. i'm sure i could physcially over power and scare my dog also. as could anyone! but i prefer positive methods that are just as effective. my dog is my friend, i don't want him to obey me out of fear.
