no.it has nothing to do with adrenaline.it's your inner self.no one can explain it to you and noone can tell you how to channel it ,it's yours noone else's.if you think you can sit on the floor cross your legs and throw in a few ohms and gain superhuman powers you are way of the mark.

Good thought. How I personally experience it, Chi is the energy that flows through all living things. The mystery is what kinda of energy (It's not ATP for any of you biology students out there). Whatever it is, it give's us energy, and without it we do not live. I do not think it's a chemical, but for all I know it could be a subatomic particle that powers other particles; as of now it's a mystery. Just know it is there. Adrenaline is a chemical found in the body. At certain times you can get an adrenaline rush. If you have a big enough adrenaline rush, you can do extraordinary things. There have been reports of a women even lifting up a car that her husband was pinned under to save him. This was adrenaline. Personally, I think that Chi is probably related to adrenaline in the way that maybe adrenaline calls upon Chi, or it may even be that adrenaline is a product of Chi massing in a certain area. Unfortanitaly I'm guessing all this. To really find the answers we can only wait until science catches up.

Chi is Focus and Energy.

Adrenaline is just a chemical in your body that tries to push you physically. For a real chi demonstration you should watch Shaolin Monks. They can calmly and slowly walk up to something like a series of bricks on a fellow monk's head and slap it smashing all the bricks - this is not about a chemical in the body it's about focus of the spirit.

Chi and the flow of it in the body are also what they use in acupuncture which is also what allows pressure points to be effective, because instead of healing, you're "attacking" the chi in the other person based on the same reason

Chi (or Ki in the Japanese arts) is more related to breathing to focus it but is really "Spiritual Energy". The Chinese and Japanese martial arts deal more with this energy. The Korean arts ... no so much.

If you're looking for information on Chi you should spell it "Ch'i"

Just found a website that also explains the more:

Chi (Chinese and I Believe Korean), Ki (Japanese), Qui (Indian)... they are all the same thing - it means life force, energy, spirit...

The asian languages are very contextual though. Chi means different things in different contexts.

In the context or martial arts, they all have Chi in one way or the other. When punching, the difference between using your chi and not is the difference between breaking a brick or breaking your hand - you have to have your energy focused.

Its not enough to just throw your arm out in a purely mechanical way - you also have to have intent to break the brick, you have to believe that you will break the brick or you will limit your energy, you will block your chi. To go through the brick, you have to let your energy move your fist through the brick and you, you have to use your chi. Its not superhuman or anything - its just not less than what you are really capable of.

Unbendable arm - this is another example of chi. If you hold your arm out and use muscle strength, your arm will be bent your partner. If you let your arm relax and extend your chi as if you are reaching for something, your arm won't be bent. Its like a hose - if its empty, you can bend the hose. If it has water running through it, it will be far harder to bend the hose. The reason is that the water has chi - it has energy as it flows. This isn't supernatural either - its allowing your body to be truly efficient with its energy rather than limited by muscles and mental perceptions.

Chi isn't going to let someone fly, but it does allow a small person to push a large person far more than simple muscle power would allow.

It wouldn't be wrong to use chi in your tae kwon do class. You might already be doing so even if your instructor doesn't use the same terminology.

Chi has this kind of mystical reputation, but its not mystical at all - its just energy. The character for Chi and Ki represents steam rising from a pot of cooking rice - that steam form of water has more chi or ki than the liquid water in the pot. Its everywhere and in the context of martial arts, its a mental way of explaining what and how to direct your energy for best effect.

yes and no,

it depends who you ask.

See the problem with these "chi" debates is that no one can come up with a clear-cut definition of chi.

some people claim it is adrenalin, some claim it is better circulation, some claim it is technique, some claim it is skill, structure, etc.

others- the unrealistic definitions that make "chi" a load of crap are the ones that say it is some "magical" energy that flows through us and people can use it to do all manner of super human actions like:

- project it to hit someone

- move things with it

- create force fields so people can't hit you

- ko someone without touching them

- ko them by looking at them, etc.

this is the "bogus" chi, that people usually start calling bs when someone mentions it.

The problem is that sometimes people mean "chi" to be something reasonable like adrenalin, and sometimes people mean it to be something they can lift up x-wing fighters out of the swamp with.

chi is an esoteric philosophy on energy. adrenaline is a hormone. two different things.

dont think that adrenaline is always your friend. once you get tunnel vision you are beyond focus and have descended into a place you cant get out of easily. you need to use it before you get too distant from logic

Adrenaline I think is a factor in what people call "chi" or "Ki".
Because it adds to the effect of it. I believe adrenaline initializes it.
But I believe "chi" or "Ki" is when everything comes into alignment.
You ever have those days were your doing a task and your one step ahead of yourself and everything else and the task gets completed swiftly and efficiently? Now try and apply that to a battle situation. It's
hard to imagine sometimes but it can be applied to almost any life situation.
But the reason it feels so prevalent in fighting is because adrenaline heightens its effect. Its not mystic or magical. Its just something that happens when mind and body focus as one.

Chi is "energy" that is a part of nature including your own body.

Definition:

Main Entry: en·er·gy
Pronunciation: \ˈe-nər-jē\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -gies
Etymology: Late Latin energia, from Greek energeia activity, from energos active, from en in + ergon work — more at work
Date: 1599
1 a: dynamic quality b: the capacity of acting or being active c: a usually positive spiritual force
2: vigorous exertion of power : effort
3: a fundamental entity of nature that is transferred between parts of a system in the production of physical change within the system and usually regarded as the capacity for doing work
4: usable power (as heat or electricity); also : the resources for producing such power

And you use it in Tae Kwon Do whether you think about it or not. You just may not be using it to the utmost efficiency.

2nd question 1st. Chi is a Chinese word. Ki is the Korean word that means the same thing. Of course you not only van but should use it. You can't be a true Martial Artist without it.

Ki (or Chi) is much different than adreniline. Adreniline is produced by the body as an autonomic respoponse to certain stimuli. Ki is something you learn to consciously harness. You must be calm in order to properly focus your Ki.

Chi is garbage unless you specify what you are calling Chi.... if you are calling chi that ability to increase your strength in high stress situations then yes. Pinching one nerve to get a reaction out of others than sure.... throwing a chi ball to knock someone out? STUPID

In western society I would consider "Chi" to be similar to the word "Holy". You can't teach it, you can't learn it in yoga class. It's a certain calmness before rage.
