For XP? Click your Start key and click All Programs. There is a file called Startup. You can see what is launching. If you are familiar enough with your programs, you can go into their preferences and turn off the launch at start or auto-up date launchers. That is what I have found is in my start up.

You may want to write down your changes...in case it affects a program in a way you did not mean to. That way, you can go back in and turn back on the start up options.

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
You can find it here:
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

Go here to download the FREE Startup Control Panel:

I also recommend downloading Startup Monitor, which will alert you anytime a program tries to register itself to run at startup and give you a prompt to allow or disallow this. Very good for preventing spyware programs and trojan horses from registering to run at startup.
