I think making him a romantic dinner is a great idea. Or tickets to some kind of sporting event that he likes. Or maybe a movie or a gift certificate for renting movies.

you have to realize how us guys perceive gift value. women will value a gift from her man no matter what it is as long as she knew that it came from his heart. for example, i remember my wife and i walking a park one day and i saw a pretty flower. i handpicked it and gave it to her with a kiss. what shocked me was how much she cried and her telling me how much that simple gesture meant to her. women are selfless like that whereas guys are more selfish but not in a bad way. get him something like tickets to his favorite basketball team game or a gift that adds to whatever hobby he has. i'm a deejay so my wife knows to buy me records and i love her for it. good luck!
