You don't want to hit the dog, smack the dog, flick the dog, or anything else.
It's a matter of redirecting your affections. When the dog jumps on to the new couch tell him "off". "NO" is used for everything and the dog may become confused.
Tell the dog "off" then "down" and then give the dog affection. Keep repeating this over and over and the dog will get the idea. If he wants attention and love he only gets it when he's on the floor. He gets nothing while he's on the sofa except and "off" and maybe a slight shove to get him off.
Try not to yell if it takes him some time. He's going off the tone of your voice which in his mind may sound excited - so you're reinfocing the behavior. Just calmly walk over, tell him "off" and if he doesn't move, grab his collar as you're telling him "off" THEN give him LOTS of attention.
Good Luck

I have the solution for you. When I met my husband 3 years ago he had our dog which slept with him, she slept on the couch in the day time when he was out of the house and I have to say that she is an older dog and if you can train our dog you can train yours. I hate the hair on my bed and my sofas. That's the worst because I'm a clean freak so I bought these dog alarms called "Tattle Tale". They worked wonders for us. Talk about getting the dog off our bed and our sofas. Now she sleeps in her own bed and we can now play with her on the floor and she NEVER climbs our furniture anymore.. trust me... they cost about $15-20. It took us only about a week and half and she got the message. You can find them on Ebay as well.. Good Luck !!!

Well, you can't blame him for not understanding how the new one is different from the old one! So, either cover the sofa with a blanket and cuddle up with your dog on it again, or cover the sofa with aluminum foil, dogs hate it and he will eventually will stop liking the sofa.

It's time to retrain. Put a blanket on the couch for him, or, if that's a problem - you need to teach him the new rules. When he jumps onto the couch: give him a slight push off and tell him NO very firmly. If he persists, you persist. Don't be afraid to give him a slight tap on the tip of his nose when you remove him from the couch. Remember, he's used to being able to be there so this is going to take some time. Make sure that other members of the family enforce the new rule also, or he will never be trained.

Aww poor doggy. You're going to have to put a sheet up on the couch for a while until hes learned not to jump up there (im assuming hes not allowed up there to protect the new furniture right?) If he jumps up there tell him with a deep, firm voice to "get down" (make sure you point to the floor as well) and if he refuses give him a firm (pain-free) shove down and tell him "No". You just have to keep doing this until he gets it, and everybody in the house must reinforce this as well. Also! If he lays down on the floor instead of on the couch give him a reward. ex: treats, a hug, a "good boy" etc etc. Good Luck!

Go to the link in my source list and read the article. It has good pointers on how to train your dog to stay off the furniture.
