You cannot claim a child that isn't a relative as a "qualifying child" on the return.

You can claim a child who lived with you for 12 months, who did not at the same time live with another reltaive, and who you supported as a "qualifying relative". This will give you an exemption but will not qualify for any credits related to the child, such as the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit.

You would have to prove that the child resided with you for the entire year and did not reside with a relative (for whom the child would be a qualifying child). You would have to prove that you supported the child, through rent bills, doctor bills, etc.

So, near impossible.

ninasgram, as usual, is correct in her answer. It's not impossible, but usually the person doesn't meet the qualifications.
