And you cannot say 'because the Bible is the word of God.' Well you can, but that is entirely circular (how do you know the Bible's the word of God? -Said so in the Bible...)
Isn't the Bible just like any other ancient story? What makes it different?
And don't say 'do you believe the phone book's true' or 'do you believe your history books are true.' Firstly, these are books created TODAY. The Phone Book is not something I base my entire existence on. And History sources of the time are analyzed and looked at OBJECTIVELY against other sources, which the Bible is not.

Bryan - No, unlike you, I ask because I want an answer. No answer that has been given to me is actually convincing at all. And I've read the Bible and know exactly what I'm not buying into.

Thanks for all the calm answers, I realise my question didn't seem so calm - but I just dislike it when people repeat the same answers I've heard before because it doesn't help me to get to the bottom of this.

I don't.
The Bible is an anthology of stories, rants, poetry, and rehashing of earlier myths. Much of what it says is quite vile. Other stuff in it is good. It's really a mixed bag. It's a collection of superstitious beliefs from a long time ago.

Ahh...but the bible IS and has been looked at objectively against other sources. IF this is a legitimate question and you REALLY want to know, please read "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell. The bible is not "like any other ancient story". The bible is different because it is TRUE - it has been proven true by archeologists and historians throughout over 2000 years of intense scrutiny. It is the ONLY book that has successfully stood the test of time. There are even multitudes of secular records that verify the events that are recorded in God's word....including the Resurrection.
BTW - God CONVICTS (puts a burden on your heart to change your ways), SATAN condemns. Satan will tempt you to do something, then condemn you for giving into the temptation. God created sex & marriage - SATAN perverted it. But God will take everything Satan means for our harm and use it for good IF WE WILL TRUST IN HIM. He loves us so much - all we have to do is be willing to commit our ways unto Him and RECEIVE His love in order to receive the peace that Jesus promised.

Because in hind sight the Bible says things that seem to be prophetic or true.
Jesus restored life with a touch of his hands.
Have YOU not heard of CPR.
How come Jesus was doing things like that 2,000 years ago and YOU still can't do that!
God destoroyed Soddoma and Gomorrah and when Lot's wife went back she became a pillar of salt.
Have you never heard of Hiroshima
Ezikiel saw the Wheel in the middle of the sky
Have you never heard of the Lone Gunmen and Area 51
Submarines and going to the Moon have made us look at Verne and Wells differently than 70 years ago.
A prophet is someone who sees things today that won't happen until tomorrow.
Einstein saw the potential of the A Bomb long before it was made.
Newton said I see so far because I stand on the shoulders of Giants.
The Bible is one of the OLDEST surviving books, to arbitarily dismiss it is to not climb up on a super giant.
I repeat, JESUS brought back life with a touch of his hand.
Now go learn CPR and you can be a little more like Jesus, only 2,000 years too late.

I see some very deep truths in the Bible. I see good advice, and warnings of some very bad possibilities. The Bible includes much that is applicable on a spiritual level even today. And it encodes information which cannot be found in any other source. Looking at the phrases (not just words) pulled out of the Bible Codes, such as those regarding the Twin Towers and the Shuttle Columbia, complete with graphic diagrams, it is at least conceivable that it contains information encoded from beyond our spacetime manifold.

Before I was saved, the bible was just really words I did not understand. I could read it over and over and not really get much of it. After I was saved and received the power of the holy spirit, God gave me the knowledge to understand on a very deep level what the bible is really talking about. I believe the bible because with the power of the holy spirit in me I feel so wonderful when i read it, and if I can really honestly feel the holy spirit working in me then I have to believe the bible because of what it says. Can you tell me why out of alll the books out there that you have to pay for, the bible is the easiest to get and in most cases is free and passed out to anyone who wants one? I think its the work of God trying to spread his word! Its AWESOME!

I view the Bible as the word of God; he has inspired prophets with his holy messages to us, and the prophets have recorded them upon scripture. As relatively easy as picking it up and reading it, the Bible can provide us with God's messages to us.
I also believe that since God loves us, he even today still speaks to us via his servants/prophets.

I understand that parts of the Bible were "lost in translation" and all that.
My belief that it's the word of God (as far it's translated correctly) comes from personal experimentation - in other words, taking the lessons I get out of it, and trying to apply them to my life, and seeing how that goes. I find, when I apply the teachings and lessons that I get out of it to my life, the results are good.
