another suggestion.. if cleaning does no good, before you chuck it and buy another, go to ebay and search "fix your PS2" there are pdf downloadable instructions available for 5 bucks or less that will give you step by step instructions on how to adjust the laser yourself.. this voids your warranty if it is under a year old, but most PS2s acting like that are out of warranty anyway.. i used the instructions on mine and fixed it right up. Sony will charge you shipping and repair costs to do the very same thing.

You can buy something called CD Lazer Cleaning Disk and if that doesn't work buy a micro fiber cloth or a fancy CD cleaning /reparing machine.
