There are some definite advantages and disadvantages. I grew up in a town of 3000 surrounded by towns of 20-100. Crime rates are generally lower, air quality is good, depending upon where you live, there's little street noise. Being able to know everyone in town can be both good and bad. I always used to hate having to drive 30-45 minutes to find a decent bookstore, clothing store or theater. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience.

less crime ( I don't have to worry too much about big crimes and locking doors obessively), you know a lot of people and what's going on that is good (or bad), things tend to be cheaper in products and housing.
