There are multiple reasons that your laptop may be slow including the fact that there may be spyware, viruses, or just a whole lot of other programs running in the background.
Start by first running a spyware scan followed by a virus scan. If both those turn up negative then try defragging your harddrive as the previous person suggests. You can do that from Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmentor
If the problem still persists then you probably have a lot of background applications running. At this point it might be better to enlist the help of someone experianced in the use of computers. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete at the same time and a window should pop up. In the tabs go to processes and organize them into your username. Find programs that you KNOW are pointless and uneeded and proceed to "End Process Tree" by right clicking on the ones you don't want. If you want to go a step further and prevent the processes from ever starting you can edit the system registry. To do that go to Start> Run and type in "regedit" without the quotation marks. From here go to the startup tab and stop any processes you don't want to start. One common one is msmsgs.exe which is normally completely useless and I would suggest getting rid of it.
As of right now those are the only ways I can think of to speed up your computer a bit. You can also add some RAM or clean up your harddrive.

First get CCleaner and use it to remove any unneeded files, then run spyware scans with spybot search and destroy and adaware.
If you have a lot of programs loading tray icons at startup then disable those you don't need.
Defragment the hard drive, if you haven't done this in a whle it could take some time.
If you have some money to spare you could get a memory upgrade

the cheapest way would be to put more ram memory in to it, you can overclock the cpu but i dont reccomend this as it can lead to the pc over heating, try the ram first
