I know what would have happened...
See, years ago, before Jesus and christians, before the ten commandments even, most humans dared to kill each other, and do bad to their own hearts and bodies holding so much hatred inside. Without religion laws among humans would have allowed killing other people more easily, and maybe knowledge and science would not have developed so easily because people's lives were at risk.
Religion, knowing there is a spiritual life besides the body has given humanity the possibility of LOVING not only think this is it and I must extract all possible profit just for myself.
Surely with or without a religion, there would have always been a few who didn't need it to be wise, but religion has contained humans for centuries.
Right now, it is becoming unnecesary for many, in fact a more reasoned less dogmatic religion is becoming necessary.
That's my 2 cts.

Glad you say that, there will be only God and Man. God didn't intented to have relgions. Relgion is man's idea to fellow God's law with their own strength. Read the book of Rome, you will see that Law was child conductor for the Lord to come. When Jesus come, He only want me to enjoy him. the only true religion on that time and in whole world was Jew. Beside isn't the religion put Jesus Christ on the Cross? for more information check this website and their book

If you mean there were no religions ever, then humans would still be a female centred society (as most animals are). Also, we would probably have reached this level of society and technological sophistication somewhere between 1000 to 2000 years ago. Women are half the brains of humanity, but most of them were never permitted to use it; any women who have been involved in social and scientific advancement did work that was equally significant as any man's.
And to "YDoncha_Blowme":
Religion caused the Rennaisance? If not for religion, there wouldn't have been the Dark Ages, fer cryin' out loud! Open a book, please!

Man needs God because that's the way God made him. Even if man doesn't believe God exists, he'll still worship some "god" even if it's only himself. Even atheism is a religion so there will never be a world w/o religions. But then again, The Lord Jesus is coming back and this world as we know it will be no more.

Something by way of SOME belief system would have developed. Man would have looked for something greater than himself to believe in and/or to worship.
Even with Atheists denying the existence of God, there are things that they hold dear to their heart and work towards a goal of furthering them.
That is essentially the definition of "worship."

Human beings who are seekers will find that this world cannot be haphazardly evolved by itself - and in the process find that there is a Creator and start a religion which worships the true Creator God.

the same thing that happened before judiasm. caos anarchy. pretty much the same way it is now. remember just because there is religion does not mean it is followed correctly. man kind is not the nicest species. many so called religious people love money, greed and power then an atheist does.

Now, or throughout history???
I wouldn't wish for history to have been without religion... religion pretty much was responsible for the Renaissance, the architechture and art, and was also responsible for the beginning of the sciences...
And Im an atheist.
