start advertising, talking to people with small kids that you know.
set a limit on the lowest number of kids you can take, eg how much money you need to survive.
set a deadline to achieve this number, if you dont get enough kids, dont quit for job yet

First, let's define "babysitting." Are you looking for a day job (e.g., 8-10 hours per day, 5 days a week)? A part time job (e.g., watch kids 1-3 hours a few times a week)?
With a single family? Or do you want a list of clients that'd call you when they needed you?
Either way, you should ask around. Post ads at the supermarket, deli, bagel store, church (or other religious place) -- always with permission. Also, ask at local pre-schools to see if they know parents that are looking for part time nannies or babysitters.
If you've never done this before, you're going to have a reference problem. While everyone needs a first job, people who hire you to look after kids are going to want to know that you're honest, qualified, safe, etc. They'll want to speak to your current employer and ask very detailed questions about your honesty, reliability, etc. If you current boss won't answer these questions (or you don't want your boss to know), you've got a problem.
If you have your own kids, that's a plus, but not a guarantee.

Ads and word by mouth! Are you certified? Have a plan in place before you take the final steps. Talk with others in that field on how to get started. If you aren't certified, enroll in classes at the community college.
Also have enough lined up before you quit your job. Most important is the planning.
