I've worked in a grooming salon. What usually happens is the dogs are dropped off in the morning. Bathed (which is ooooh... a 10-15 minute process depending on the size of the dog). Drying is what takes the most time. Anywhere from 15 min for a little dog - 30+min for a large dog. You have to take into account long hair or thick hair etc. On cases like that we would dry as much as we could then put the dog in a crate w/ a drier attached to it and they would continue to dry for about an hour. (The chow took the longest.. yeesh!!)
After that the dog THEN goes to the groomer and depending on the cut and detail it would take about 5 min - 30 min. So.. it's about 2-3 (maybe) hours for a good groomer.
She charged according to breed of dog and standard cuts - ie. poodle, maltese, bischon etc. The cheapest price I saw in there was $35 all the way up to $125 for things like Giant Schnauzers. And then extra for aggressive dogs. It didn't matter what kind of cut they got she based it off of breed.
Just a bath was a whole other base price - I think it was $25 or $30 for bath. But the bath always included, shampoo, conditioner, ear cleaning, nail trim and interal and external anal gland expression, drying and brush out.
Cats were pretty standard at about $30 regardless of bathing and cut.
I personally think they don't charge enough. Having worked in a grooming shop and I know what happens behind the scenes and how much pain people go through even w/ the good dogs (Don't get me started on the aggressive dogs AND cats..oh cats are the worse!!!) Groomers should charge double!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been grooming dogs for four years. The price really just depends on what kind of dog you have and what kind of service you are wanting the dog to have. If your dog is a smooth coated dog then it shouldn't cost you more than like twenty dollars. Where as if you have a ****-zu or a long coated breed the price is going to go up. Because of the amount of work that goes into brushing your dog and make sure that it is trimmed properly. If you are wanting a haircut on your dog most groomers have a set price for doing haircuts on small dogs. I charge 27 dollars for a regular hair cut on any small animal. If the dogs are matted I usually charge between three to five dollars to brush it out. If the dog is in really bad shape I charge 10 dollars for a mat fee. Most breed have their own specified haircuts but most groomers, if you explain in detail what you are wanting your dog to look like then they can usually get a pretty good representation of what you wanted. Don't be to specific because a lot of times it is hard to make a dog look like a picture of a completely different dog. As far as time goes. It depends on the temperment of your dog. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they aren't so it really just depends how you dog is feeling. It shouldn't take more than just a couple of hours to get your baby done. However if the groomer is busy you should expect it to take longer.

How good of groomers are you? Taking a grooming class doesn't make you a good groomer. Grooming classes only get you started in becoming a good groomer. Charging $50 per dog maybe too much or not enough depending on the dog. A lab owner will not pay you $50 to bath and brush out a wash and wear breed like a lab. However if you were brushing out and bathing matted newfoundlands for $50 each, everyone would be bringing them to you. Most groomers charge a set rate for the size, breed and type of dog being groomed as well as an hourly rate for those that take longer. For example a nice miniature schnauzer who is regularly groomed and nice to work with would be charged the base rate of $25 for brushing, bathing, drying, clipping, nails, ears and anal glands. This dog would only take a good groomer an hour to groom. A matted rarely groomed miniature schnauzer that bites might cost $50+ because the dog took longer to do and required more care. This dog would most likely take a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours to put it in a good trim unless you are shaving it down and starting over not to mention the teeth dodging. You need to make sure that you charge enough to cover your liability insurance, rent, equipment, taxes including social security, as well as pay for yourself. So you need to structure prices carefully in order to stay in business. Hopefully your grooming classes will go over some business management. If not you need to take a business management class or two. Small businesses go out of business because of mismanagement more then a lack of professional knowledge. Grooming shops are no exception. Good luck

I've been answering questions all morning!
I'm glad to have found this, because I love helping people. :]
It depends on your dog. If your dog has a lot of hair, short hair, what kind of style you would like.
I however, do not know those prices, the best thing is to call either:
1. Your Local Petsmart groomer.
2. Ask friends about groomers and see which ones they've had the best services with.
A lot of time the minimum for grooming time takes an hour. Sometimes it takes up to three or four hours! (That's because the pet has a lot of fur and is a fairly large dog.)

i have a 5 lbs maltese. Groomer charges $35 for whatever type of cut we get her. Usually we go for the puppy cut, not too short and not long. and it takes the groomer about 30-40 minutes to do everything. It depends on the place though, like we have to make an appointment let say at 11am and we wont get to pick her up til around 2pm.

I have a Peke and she is cut short. I know they are suppose to have hair that swags but I like hers short. She goes to the groomer once a month ($27.00) and in between times I bathe her at home.
Her grooming includes, shampoo, haircut, nails, and the release of the anal glands (which is important).... oh yeah, a pretty pink bow in her hair.

I have had groomers charge me $45 to $70. It just depends on the groomer and the services. But, please don't shop just on price. Shop around for the best groomer for your dog. The x-tra money is worth it if your groomer follows directions, your dog looks great and comes back all happy. Good Luck.
