Between May 2000 and August 2006, Brazil lost nearly 150,000 square km of forest—an area larger than Greece.

Deforestation in the Amazon is the result of several activities, such as clearing for cattle pasture, colonization and subsistence agriculture, infrastructure improvements, commercial agriculture and logging.

60-70% of deforestation in the Amazon is because of cattle ranches while the rest is mostly due to small-scale subsistence agriculture. Despite the widespread press attention, large-scale farming currently contributes relatively little to total deforestation in the Amazon. Logging results in forest degradation but rarely direct deforestation. However, studies have showed a close correlation between logging and future clearing for settlement and farming.

On the other hand, the Atlantic Forest in Brazil is a unique rainforest that once covered more than a million square km, extending from Recife southward through Rio de Janeiro to Florianópolis and westward into Paraguay. Today, the forest is reduced to less than 5% of its original size, and is located mostly in steep mountainous regions.
