It took his dentist an hour to pull out his tooth and it was the most excruciating pain he had ever felt. Imagine the torture scenes from the movie Hostel. What would you do to convince somebody to to to a dentist again?

Sounds like they got a bad dentist. Look for referals for a better one.

One thing that might work is to remind the person that if they don't go to a dentist on a regular basis they will lose all their teeth.

Tell him not all dentists are the same. He may have to try several before he finds one he's happy with. I know my children's teeth really suffered because we had bad experiences early on. I finally found one that we love, but it took years. For 3 kids we wound up having to go through over 15 fillings and 3 root canals in just a months time. If I could have convinced them years sooner they wouldn't have to be going through that pain now. Their dentist now is awesome and he makes them feel really comfortable. The main thing I tell them is that it can be painful yes, but you can control how bad you let it be. They only have to tell the dentist when it's unbearable and he will listen. It's a necessary part of life, just like going to the doctor, taking your pet to the vet, etc. Dental health is just as important as any other aspect of your health. You can have problems in your mouth that can affect your whole body. After having 3 kids, I can personally say the pain of an infected tooth or the gum infection I once had was way worse than the labor of all 3 kids combined. Good luck.

1. Tell them to suck it up, everyone has to overcome some fears for the betterment of their health.

2. If he really is anxious...they can give you laughing gas to calm nerves. I did it recently for the first time and that is the ONLY way we could have finished the procedure. And there are probably docs that can even put you under, although rare.

3. And from your description...sounds like he needs a GOOD dentist with a great deal of understanding and empathy...if they understand your situation...they will be as gentle as they can!

GOOD LUCK and you're a good friend! ;)

Convince them to go with you when you go to the dentist (make it just like hanging out, casual..) & go to a good dentist who makes sure you are relaxed and calm..

Tell him it'll be better to catch things when they start than before something really bad happens. Maybe if he takes really good care of his teeth he doesn't need to go for a while...

There are Dentist out there that cater to cowards etc,let him do the picking, and do the talking etc. If he really had such an "awful"experience, that was so unnecessary and shouldn't have happened. It would be important for him to take charge of this situation, and you should be the backup etc. Take care. I wouldn't want to convince anyone to go to a dentist, they're all crooks. Certainly my teeth have been completely ruined by dentists doing totally unnecessary work, just so they can make some money.
