A turkey or peanut butter sandwich is the best food to have after exercise. They are both packed with protein, essential for the recovery of damaged muscles. If you can't get your hands on sandwiches, then a small packet of salted peanuts would be ideal.
If you're going for short aerobic exercise, such as running for 30 mins, then nothing is quite suitable, especially if calories are to be burnt. But for longer distances, then low GI foods such as porridge, is perfect, so long as it's eaten at least hour and a half before the exercise.

This depends upon which type of exercise you plan to be doing.
*Bananas are great for pre- post exercise.
*H2O is great before (sip, don't chug), during (same thing), and after exercise(ditto).
*Loading up on easily digestible nutrients (i.e., protiens, carbs, etc.) tends to be best absorbed within 30 minutes after finishing exercise, too.
**Soy milk ("Silk" or "Trader Joes" is best (;=] ).
Hope this helps!
