The Judeo-Christian God is called "He" because Yahweh, the Israelite tribal God from whom He evolved, was a male deity. (There were many Gods and Goddesses worshipped in that part of the world at the time.) The male pronoun has been grandfathered in ever since. ;-)

Personally I believe that the Divine is beyond gender, but human beings, interpreting that fundamentally incomprehensible entity in human terms, usually feel most comfortable relating to the Divine as He or She. But that's just my opinion.

Your right. God is a Spirit and isn't a human according to our idea of what a human is supposed to be. Jesus, who was God incarnate, became the God-man and thus took on human form. Since, therefore, Jesus was a male God is referred to as a He because Jesus IS God and He was a guy. God the Father is a Spirit.

We call God with masculine names and pronouns because those are the gender He chose to use to identify Himself in the Bible.
Father - masculine
Son - masculine
Holy Spirit - neuter
The Hebrew for "spirit" is wind, breath, or spirit according to Brown, Drive, and Briggs Hebrew Lexicon.

Because the males that were in power when the books were written deemed it so. We are made in the likeness of God, both male and female. So, that means God is both...male and female. Spirits have genders.

Humans add a gender to better relate to the Divine. Paramahansa Yogananda, for example, was a yogi who taught people that God is beyond conception and gender...however, we he spoke about his relation to God - he always said She. He personally felt a stronger connection and relation to a Divine Mother than a Divine Father.

Gender is meaningless when to comes to God...it is just our own preference.

In most languages, when one refers to something or a group of things, they use a masculine pronoun.
Like in Spanish, if I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters, I would say Tengo cinco hermanos, the -os- being masculine.
Inanimate objects are often refered to as male, with the exception of Cars for some reason, because I guess of homophobia, a guy saying to another guy about his car that He is cherry, or he is a beauty, would be a little awkward.

Early paternalistic roman catholic idea. Prior to the third century many of the church leaders were women.

This was seen as a threat by the male church leaders so women were relegated to positions of inferiority. Including Gods feminine side and Mary Jesus' favorite was made out to be a common whore.

i agree I feel God has no gender however the reason the word he is used in scripture is that at the time of its writing people lived in a strictly male dominated society where women were mere property (much as in Islam today)the Male writers could not even conceive of a Deity that was so power full it could be other than male!

Understand that words like MAN, HUMAN etc are universal for both genders. God took upon himself as what He is - with His Righteous
Knowledge which transcends our puny brains.

Judge not your God with human brains.
