I work for a doctor and this is what I have learned:
Within 20 minutes - Blood pressure, body temperature, and heart rate drop to normal
Within 8 hours - Smoker’s breath disappears. Carbon monoxide levels drop & oxygen levels rise to normal
Within 24 hours - Chance of heart attack decreases
Within 48 hours - Nerve endings start to regroup.
Within 3 days- Breathing is easier
Within 2-3 months - Circulation improves, Walking becomes easier, Lung capacity increases by 30%
Within 1-9 months - Sinus congestion improves, Shortness of breath decreases, Cilia grows back, Energy increases
Within 1 year - Excess risk of heart disease is half that of a smoker
Within five years - Lung cancer death rate decreases by half, Stroke risk reduced, etc.,etc.

It's never too late - even for your lungs - to quit smoking. If there has been any major damage done, quitting now won't necessarily repair all of it, but the overall benefits FAR outweight not stopping.
Best of luck!!

I just quit one month ago. I am 47. Consider yourself ten years ahead of me. If I had quit at your age my lungs would be clear right now.
