When reading the details of a hotel, a lot of them say they have a Turn Down Service.

The maid/housekeeping service comes and straightens out your room for you one last time.. and turns your bedsheets and blankets down.. and usually leaves you mints or something on your pillow for a little treat.

They usually sneak in while you are out for the evening.. they don't usually come in if you're there.

Traditionally hotel "turn down service" is a second visit to each room during the dinner hour to prep the beds for the night, leave a mint or flower on the pillows, and freshen up the bathroom (replace any used towels, etc.). Sadly, this level of service is disappearing, even from the finest hotels. In general, turn down service means a hotel must bring in a second shift of maids b/c the day shift ends around 4pm.

It is more common today to make turn down service available by request. That means the guest has to phone "housekeeping" each day to request the service, otherwise, you get no turn down, period. The most aggravating change at U.S. hotels IMHO is the trend to not change bed linen or bathroom towels. The guest must remember to place a certain card on a bed to have the sheets changed. Hotels offer the excuse that it's friendly to the environoment. They don't mention they are saving a lot of labor cost.

It is a nice service that usually only the nicer hotels do anymore.
They send a maid in to take the bedspread off and turn down the blankets and sheet. They fold down triangle at each side of the bed and leave a mint on your pillow for sweet dreams.

Turn Down Service varies from each hotel chain.... Some will simply set the sheets to be ready for you to climb in. Others will bring such things as a chocolate on your pillow, or other things that may be comforting.
