It's not quite soul food, but try the Chicken Shack onthe corner of Euclid and Imperial. It's a horrible part of town, and it's next door to a liquor store, but they have awesome fried chicken, gizzards, fried catfish, and awesome banana pudding (complete with vanilla wafers). It's pretty much takeout only, though.
There's also a place in La Mesa on Fletcher Parkway called Fix me a Plate. It's next door to Souplantation.
