I suppose there could be 2 ways to solve this problem. The first one being messy is to sand the artex down, the second which is also messy would be to skim over the artex with plaster. Havent got a clue though about the cost sorry

Point one - do not sand the artex off if it was done before year 2000 as it will contain asbestos.
Paint it with a very watery mix of artex which will soften it and allow you to scrape it off, although this is hard going.
i have heard of some people using a steam striper to soften also but i'm not sure how successful this is.
best answer may be to get a plasterer to "skim coat" over it. which means he applies a thin coat of plaster over it.

hi mate,,i do this kind of thing everday ,2 ways to get round your problem the cheaper 1, scrape back the artexas much as possible, good coat of pva, then a coat of bonding plaster, and then skim when set ,only problem with this is that british gypsum(company that produce plaster)dont garantee this method any more, there can be a problem with the bonding adhering to the artex,, but i have only seen this once in ten years,
the second and more expensive method is to over board your ceilings and then re-skim them, dependant on what area you live in expect to pay around £450, good lucki

The best, and possibly cheapest way would be to get a plasterer to level off with fresh plaserer. As to cost, get a free estimate. the alternative is messy. Heavy duty scraping off, possibly assisted with a steam stripper. This could result in localised damage, and you will then need a plasterer after all.

a big scraper, lots of sweat and tears and the next six months coughing up what you have swallowed. Before you start, buy a face mask, some safety specs and a tin of plasters to cover the blisters right in the center of your palm, don't let folk see these bloisters, they will think you got them some other way.........

you can now buy special stuff to remove it in strips. trademan will charge you loads to do the same. artex was all the rage about twenty years ago, not so any more yukky stuff!
