There are no alternatives to coumadin. The risks for a person with factor v leiden include heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism. All of these are potentially fatal. I know that it sucks but it is the only thing we have.

The JAMA had a article in November about a study done with 4,000 patients......Results,
You have a 97 percent chance of NOT having a Stroke when on Coumadin and
You have a 94 percent chance of NOT having a Stroke when off of Coumadin

So the difference is only 3 percent!

I'm STOPPING mine and know many others with afibwho are not on any POISON Rx's. Even aspirin is Very Bad for the body.....all NSAID'

S are. They cause inflamination in the body which causes the body to creates Cortisol in the body and long term that is NOT God!

Coumadin or warfarin is a serious drug with serious side effects. However it is used to manage serious conditions. Many more people die of thromboembolic events (blood clots) than bleeding, and you are at very high risk of blood clots. You definitely should be discussing your concerns with a hematologist.

The risks of stopping coumadin are just what you would expect, blood clots. Blood clots in places where blood clots do a lot of damage like, in the brain (stroke), lung (pulmonary embolism), heart (myocardial infarction or heart attack), and deep venous thrombois (blood clots in leg veins).

Alternatives are the use of other blood thinners, however I don't think antiplatelet drugs like aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) are appropriate in your situation. Heparin and the low-molecular weight heparins (Lovenonx for example) might work, but are only available as an injection and are very expensive. Again this is something that should be discussed with you hematologist.

You should not just stop taking it. However, go back to your doctor and tell him about the side effects. There are a lot more drugs out there now to deal with that. Coumadin is just the popular one right now.

If your doctor don't seem interested then go to another doctor and get a second opinion.

i had a huge blood clot 7 years ago with my second pregnancy they put me on injections of lovenox i was on it my whole pregnancy and stopped after the birth of my child so anyway just a year ago i had my third child and i refused to use aspirin or any anti-coagulant and i was fine until a day or two after i had the baby i started feeling symptoms and my blood work was showing me as having low protein C so they put me back on the lovenox for i think it was six weeks and since i have used nothing they tell me i am still at risk for clots and should be on coumadin too and i do worry all the time but so far so good basically its your choice they cant make you continue on this drug but just be fully aware of your condition and risks and well the ultimate outcome which could be death why havent you asked your hematologist about this?

Coumadin (warfarin) damn near killed my 84 year old mother. It is rat poison after all.

The physician was just as much to blame as the drug itself. They never checked the blood levels at the same time of day. If it was checked in the morning before she had taken her midday dose, it read low and they increased her dose. If the checked it after lunch it was high and they lowered it. What clueless idiots. I finally had them prescribe 4mg and 1mg so we could break the tablets into the varying dosages.
It never helped as she kept having TIAs and atrial fibrulation.

Finally after one rather nasty hospital stay, a physician took her off Coumadin and placed her on Plavix. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

No problems since, no more bruising and a much more active life with increased energy.

Go to your physician and check out the alternatives. There is now a generic Plavix that is very affordable. Another effective drug is Atenalol.

Quit taking Coumadin as soon as possible! If your physician won't cooperate, find another who will give you a second opinion and explore alternatives.

A person is usually put on that to thin the blood after a stroke or heart attack, or clots like you say to keep it thin. If you go off of this suddenly, you are at risk for any of these! I would advise not to go off. Especially if you have a history of clots. You could clot easier and that could lead to a stroke or heart attack. Your better off to stay on it.
