reduced the population through mass killings and wars. Unfortunately they probably killed the person who was to cure cancer, and the person who was going to invent faster than light travel, and the person who invented alternative energy, and many other human problem we need to solve. Not worth the price, if you ask me.

it was responsible for the earliest laws and created a common moral code. it defined mankind's transition into a civilized species. it was the founder of research, history, most science (most significant probably being philosophy) and gave humanity a sense of purpose allowing for developments and technology that might otherwise have never been pursued. religion made us more than just animals that could use tools. it made us think about our world on a deeper level.

of course, there is alot of bad that has been created by specific beliefs.... most of those beliefs getting dropped as history passes... but your question was on the good. none of this has anything to do with whether any of it is true. something can be true and be bad for us, and something can be good for us, even if a big lie.

edit:
while it does not fit into today's model, religion was also an effective tool used to build nations in the past. the freedom from regulated religion is what led to today's most effective govements.

Depends on the person and what they chose to do in the name of religion. In some cases it helped a person who was having a hard time finding their way in life to change and be a better person. In other cases you find people who are bad using the name of religion to further their bad deeds. Ultimately though for the most part I think religion has helped those of mankind that were searching for the good. A lot of religious organizations feed the hungry and clothe the poor and help people through trying times. Plus it has inspired a lot of people to try and do more good. Stuff they might have otherwise decided that they were too busy to do.

for some just a big fat mess...but for others hope for a better future here on earth as well as in the next life. So there are many pros and cons. You just have to make sure your choice in religion teaches you the "right" in the world and not all the "wrong".

Actually a lot of bad things have happened in the name of religion. That is why I choose a personal relationship with Jesus myself.

Christianity is not a "religion", it is salvation through the love and the blood of Jesus. Accepting His gift of love gives you eternal life. He is mankind's greatest gift - and sacrifice.

Religion gives something solid to hold onto in times of despair, uncertainty, and tragedies. i've lived through all of these in my life, and if I didn't have my faith, I know I would be dead by now.

Its more of an indivitual blessing I think then to a group effort. What you put into your religion or relationship (with Jesus) is what you get out of it.
