Sources of confusion are that not all speakers of English make clear distinctions between different types of dried grapes (raisins, sultanas, currants), and that golden-coloured raisins made from other grape varieties may be marketed as sultanas. In addition, virtually all California raisins are produced from the sultana (or Thompson Seedless) grape, even those which, because of different drying processes, do not resemble the traditional sultana raisin. The term sultana is not commonly used to refer to any type of raisin in American English; as most American raisins are from sultana grapes, they are called simply raisins or golden raisins, according to colour. The latter, which at least in colour resemble the traditional sultana raisin, are artificially dried and sulfured, in distinction to `natural' raisins. All non-organic sultana grapes in California and elsewhere are treated with the plant hormone gibberellin. The sultana raisin was traditionally imported to the English-speaking world from the Ottoman Empire (hence the name sultana, from the feminine form of sultan) and Turkey and Australia are major producers.

I think I can try to answer your question...
a sultana originated in Smyrna, Turkey. It's a small, golden grape and was once used to make wine.
It's offspring in the U.S. is known as the Thompson seedless grape.
In basic terms a raisin is simply a dried grape.
Currants:
There are two different fruits called currants.
1. the first....resembling a tiny, dark raisin...is the seedless, dried "Zante grape".
It's name comes from its origin....Corinth, Greece
2. The second....is a tiny berry related to the goosberry.
I hope this helps.

If you are talking about dried fruits used in recipes, sultanas usually refer to white raisins (Sunmaid sells them in the yellow box). They tend to have more sulphites added to keep their color. It's more of a British term than an American one. Raisins are almost always seedless these days. Raisins in recipes are the familiar raisins in the red box if they are Sunmaid. Currants are raisins made with a very small grape, sometimes sold fresh as champagne or zante grapes. They are completely different than the currant (red, white and black) berry which are nearly impossible to find fresh in the States. We usually get them in juice, jam or cordials as they are very fragile and don't ship well.
